Often hailed as the Queen of Venda, Makhadzi won the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act at the BET Awards in Los Angeles, California.
Despite her success, the 28-year-old faced financial hurdles as the arts and culture department didn’t sponsor her trip. She had to borrow money from a loan shark to attend the event.
“When it comes to that, I don’t know why it didn’t happen, but what matters is I’m here with a BET award. I represented South Africa, and they came to support this achievement. The rest is history. From today onwards, more artists will get support, so they don’t have to borrow money like I did,” Makhadzi said.

Believing in her talent, she took the financial risk, confident of her victory and subsequent rise in her booking fees.
“I think God was with me. He felt the pain I went through having to use my last money and borrow more. This time around, He blessed me with a BET award so I can make that money back twentyfold. It’s all about patience, self-belief, and manifesting. Now, when I perform at gigs, my fees will go up. Watch out,” Makhadzi added.
Looking ahead, Makhadzi expressed her ambition to win a Grammy award in the future.
