Makhadzi Steals The Spotlight At The Basadi Awards

The Basadi In Music Awards celebrated Mzansi’s Mbokodos in style. It was a night of glitz and glamour as women of all colours were celebrated during the third leg of the Basadi In Music Awards 2024.

The prestigious ceremony took place at Joburg Theatre in Joburg on Saturday, 10 August. The theme for this year was “Girl In The Mirror – Our Reflection.” The night was full of dance and joy as stars like The Ngcobo Girls, Skye Wanda, Lady Zamar, and Mercy Phakela entertained the guests with their performances. The awards were hosted by Unathi Nkayi.

Hloni Modise, the CEO of Basadi In Music Awards, told the publication that she was scared but looking forward to the big show. She said organising a show like this wasn’t easy as it takes time and energy.

“I am looking forward to this wonderful day as many people are here to celebrate with us. I’m happy with the results,” she said.

Mercy Phakela said she is happy they honoured her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. She said she was cancelled and sidelined by the industry.

“I was ready to give up on this music. I am happy to be alive and still celebrated,” she said.

The second Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Linah Ebony Ngcobo. She said this award meant a lot to her and her family.

“This is beautiful for me and everyone who has been with us from the beginning. We are nothing without you guys.

“We are who we are because of your love and support. We are here because of your support, not bribes,” she said.

DJ Zinhle was honoured with Trailblazer Of The Year and said her mum Jabu was always beside her. She said she has worked with women since she started her journey in the music industry.

DJ Zinhle said she has her awards outside South Africa and the Basadi In Music Awards is her first award in South Africa. The musician, whose real name is Zinhle Jiyane, said she was happy that she was recognised for her work.

“Thank you guys so much for this. I love you all and this means a lot to me,” she said.

Makhadzi, whose real name is Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, walked away with the award for Dance Artist Of The Year and International Achievement Award.

She said everything that happens to her is a miracle. She said she is happy that she is getting all the awards and she deserves them.

“When I started in the streets they called me crazy. I now have BET Awards, and now the Basadi In Music Awards,” she said.

Nontokozo Mkhize received the Newcomer Award and dedicated it to her mum.

“Thank you so much for this award. We did it Mum and this is for us,” she said.

DJ Zinhle and Basetsana Kolwane walked away with the Collaboration Award. The award-winning female producer also walked away with the award for DJ Of The Year.

“Thank you to everyone who has shown love to us. May there be light in the world,” she said.

Noni Khumalo walked away with the Entertainment TV Producer Award and said she was happy to get her first award as a broadcaster.

She thanked the SABC team for the love and support they had given her over the past year.

Zaza Mokhethi’s son took her award for Gospel Artist Of The Year on her behalf as she couldn’t be at the venue.

Some of the winners of the night include Thembi Seete for Best Style Artist Of The Year, Nelza Buda for Entertainment Radio Producer Of The Year, Pleasure Tsa Manyalo for Traditional Artist Of The Year, and Brenda Mtambo for Songwriter Of The Year.
