Lerato Sengadi: we as ladies are in constant danger, and no one cares about us.

A recent traumatic experience at the hands of petty thugs has left Lerato Sengadi painfully aware that ladies in South Africa aren’t as safe as they ought to be. In an interview with TshisaLIVE, she said everything she had been through since a gaggle of thugs tried to mug her last Thursday highlighted one painful truth.

“This whole incident that happened has just made me realise another time that, as women, we are honestly on our own,” she said. Lerato said everything from the method of opening a case with the police, to trying to boost awareness online – only to seek out that she’d been blocked by the official Saps Twitter page – made her realise that the country and its criminal justice system could do better by women.

It has been the foremost disheartening thing to observe as police chase street vendors and old women trying to form a living from selling their atchars on the road during this lockdown to undertake and feed their families, while all the particular criminals are enjoying the liberty to terrorise people.

Lerato has since taken to social media to question what the govt , the women’s ministry and other officials were doing to make sure that ladies are safe from predatory men, whether on the road jogging or in their houses. She encouraged women to always make sure that they actively believe their own safety because it’s a matter of each woman for herself.

“For the foremost part, women got to know that you simply are on your own. If you go jog or to anywhere really, you would like to make sure that you simply are ready to protect yourself. If you’re jogging in these areas where these guys are targeting women, [you need] to be armed with a taser, [or] aerosol a minimum of . there’s nobody on our side. There’s nobody searching for us. They know that gender-based violence is that the biggest thing happening at this point during this country. They still don’t take care of us.
