Late actor Menzi Ngubane’s wife speaks out
“I can’t let my husband’s legacy perish!” These were the words of legendary actor Menzi Ngubane’s wife Sikelelwa.
Menzi, who died in 2021 and was best known for playing Sibusiso on Generations, is remembered in a new documentary Ngubs: The Life and Times of Menzi Ngubane.
The documentary was directed by Ntokozo Mahlalela and will be launched on 28 August. It will play at Nu Metro from 2 September.
Sikelelwa who is the executive producer told the publication: “He was the one who wanted to do it alive.
“He said no one could tell his story better than him but unfortunately, God had his own ideas for my husband.”
Producer Siyabonga Zungu (46) said Menzi was more than a friend to him.
“We shared a lot of ideas and the documentary was an idea I came up with, which he supported.
Due to his work schedule and ill health, we never got to do it together,” he said.
Siyabonga said after Menzi died, his wife agreed that the project should go ahead.
“We should tell the stories of our sports, arts, and entertainment heroes. We believe the fans would like to know more about them,” he said.
Siyabonga said the Gauteng Film Commission and the National Film and Video Foundation provided 40% of the production cost but they were looking for other sources of assistance.
“The documentary will give insight into the life of Menzi, both on and off-screen. The story is told through the memories of those who lived, worked, and collaborated with him,” he said.
“We are pioneering documentary production to honour true legends. We aim to keep their legacies alive.”
