It ends in tears of JOY for Somizi Mhlongo

It seems like the storm is over for media personality Somizi Mhlongo. Just months after he was roped back into Mzansi’s biggest singing competition, Idols SA, he has landed another major TV gig as the new host of 1Magic talk show, Downtime with Somizi.

According to producers, the show is filled with twists and turns where Somizi, who was recently rocked by allegations of abuse, will chat to guests during an activity that takes them outside of their comfort zone.

They will take part in a fun and quirky experience for the first time, before heading to a relaxed and low-key dinner where themed topics will be explored.

The show will feature guests such as Peggy-Sue Khumalo and Connie Ferguson, who will talk about the beauty of love and pain of loss.

After Idols SA put him on ice following the abuse allegations, Somizi previously told the publication that it was one of the toughest times in his life.

“I am innocent until proven guilty. I missed being on the show and returning was a mutual decision between producers and myself. They were very compassionate and understanding, and asked if I was ready to come back.”

Other featured guests include T-Bo Touch and DJ Sbu (hustlers), Bobby Motaung and Shauwn Mkhize (soccer rebels) as well as Anele Mdoda and Thembisa Nxumalo (sisterhood).

In a statement, director of local entertainment channels at M-Net Shirley Adonisi told the People’s Paper that they were excited about the show.

“A show like Downtime with Somizi will appeal to our audience’s diverse and discerning tastes. It is another exploration for the channel to play in the talk show genre, which viewers have previously enjoyed. 1Magic will continue to expand its repertoire with shows that cut across many genres and formats, and that’s something our audience can continue to expect from us,” she said.

The show premieres on DStv channel 103 on 1 April.
