How many people killed Senzo Meyiwa? Family breathes fire – Blasts Bheki Cele and the police
For six years they’ve been waiting for justice.
It has been six years since Pirates goal keeper Senzo Meyiwa was killed and the family hasn’t been able to get closure.
But finally it seemed there was a light at the end of the tunnel.
News broke that the murder weapon used in the crime was allegedly found and the person linked to the firearm was already in jail, serving a prison term for a different matter.
Would they finally get the closure they’ve been waiting for, the family wondered?
But it seems not. They don’t believe a word of it all.
“It is all lies,” the Meyiwa family says. “They think we are fools, like we can’t think for ourselves. They think because they have money, they can do whatever they please in this world,” Sfiso Meyiwa says.
“What is unsettling is that what is being said is not the truth.”
October is a sensitive time for the Meyiwas because it is the month he was murdered in Vosloorus, where he and then girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo gathered with friends at her mother’s house.
Just two weeks ago, the family had something to smile about when, after six years, Senzo’s tombstone was erected and handed over to the family by the South African Football Association (SAFA).Senzo’s older brother Sfiso says the family have suffered one blow after another. All they want is peace from knowing the person responsible for the murder is rotting in jail.
According to him, it is not the first time that investigators have linked someone who is already in jail to the case.
“It happened earlier in the year too. There is a lot of misleading going on here. “Kanti how many people killed Senzo?” Sfiso asks.
The Meyiwa family believe someone rich and powerful is hiding and protecting the killer. “Senzo was not killed by people who were not in the house, robbers as they say. He was shot by a person who was in the house after an argument started, we all know that. That has always been the truth we know. The money will not get them very far,”he adds.
An emotional Sfiso admits things are hard, especially for elders in the family like his mother. It doesn’t help seeing Senzo’s name drenched up every time there’s a new lead, only for it to fizzle.
“I am a strong believer. I know that God is in control of everything. We know there are investigators on this case who are not shaken and are standing firm on the truth. They have tried to distract them but have failed. In the name of Jesus, those who are trying to hide the truth will not succeed,” Sfiso says.
It’s been six years and two police ministers have made promises to the family that have yet to materialise, they say. Then minister Fikile Mbalula promised the killers would be found.
The current police minister, Bheki Cele, has also promised the family a few times that they are intensifying efforts to close the case.
One day they hope to know the whole truth with the help of the ministry and Afriforum, Sfiso says. Afriforum has been following up on the case.
In the meantime, all they can hope for is peace.
