High school swearthearts: Manie Libbok and Verna-Lee’s love story

Earlier in 2023, Verna-Lee Arries said “yes” when Springbok star, Manie Libbok got down on one knee and asked to marry her. For South Africans, this was a joyous moment worth celebrating but for the lovers, it was a moment that was written in the stars.

Manie Libbok and Verna-Lee Arries have been together for nearly seven years but it seems as if they are ready to be together for life. The lovers have enjoyed a beautiful journey ever since they met in high school and now they are preparing for their next big chapter: Walking down the aisle. From shared interests, to a chance meeting, here’s Manie and Verna-Lee’s beautiful love story.

WHERE DID MANIE LIBBOK MEET VERNA-LEE?
The two lovebirds met at Outeniqua High School where Manie Libbok joined as a shy, soft-spoke Grade 11 with plenty of talent and skill. According to Verna-Lee, she actually initiated the conversation because he was a bit quiet!

Speaking to Insider SA, she revealed, “We were in the same business class and that’s where we met. He was very shy and quiet and I’m very bubbly so I was the first one talking to him,”

Meanwhile, for Manie, it was love at first sight. He said, “She caught my eye from the word go, to be honest. I just wanted to be close to her.”

THE ROAD TO THE AISLE
The two lead a relatively private life. Verna-Lee explained how she deals with the spotlight when she said, “Being a girlfriend of a Stomers rugby player is quite normal to me, I love my normal life. But obviously we’re in the limelight and you have to get used to a lot of stuff, especially the media,”

Of course the one bit of news that they couldn’t keep out of the public eye came when they announced their engagement earlier this year. Manie Libbok and Verna-Lee Arries will now be preparing for their upcoming wedding and one can be sure it will also make big news when they walk down the aisle.
