When her parents bought her a ticket to an event on Friday 16 December, little did they know they were buying her a ticket to death. 15-year-old Kgalaletso Maluleke from Winterveld, Tshwane, was shot in a robbery while on her way home from an event at Giant Stadium.

Her uncle Thabang Mmatli (34) said the family did not learn of the tragedy until the next morning. “We got worried on Saturday morning. My sister and brother-in-law were supposed to go to work but couldn’t because Kgalaletso was not home yet,” he said.

Thabang said Kgalaletso’s father took her to catch a taxi to the event and her last words to him were that she owed him a lot and would be home by 6 pm. He said when she wasn’t home by 6 pm, her parents assumed she was just out having fun. “Her friends told us when they got to a bridge near the event, they were approached by men driving a Nissan NP200 bakkie.

“They wanted to mug them but the children ran for their lives and were shot,” he said. “One was shot in the hand and another in the lower back. “But Kgalaletso was shot at close range on the lower right chest,” he said. Thabang said the government was failing South Africans. “Why are people mugging others? “Are you telling me that a phone is worth the life of a person?
