Headache for Idols SA as viewers dump the show

It seems that viewers have lost interest in talent search competition Idols SA. The talent show has been bleeding viewers since its return for season 18 on DStv’s Mzansi Magic on 17 July.

In the past, the viewership was more than a million, but it has now fallen below that number.

According to the ratings for last month, the show has only managed to attract 744 000 viewers.

The numbers first started dropping during season 17 after one of the judges, Somizi Mhlongo, was dropped following abuse allegations by his estranged husband, Mohale Motaung.

Many people thought the sagging viewership was caused by his departure. But he has been reintroduced with a new panel of judges, including rapper JR and actress Thembi Seete.

The publication contacted M-Net for comment and although the channel didn’t respond to most of the questions sent, it expressed the belief that the show was still very popular.

M-Net director of local entertainment channels Shirley Adonisi said: “IdolsSA remains very popular with viewers, and we are looking forward to unearthing our next Idols SA winner.”
