Former City of Tshwane mayor Stevens Mokgalapa fails to pay rates

The former mayor of City of Tshwane, Stevens Mokgalapa, has been sent a final letter of demand by the municipality to pay the outstanding balance for his municipality services.

During his 12-month stint at the helm of the City of Tshwane, Mokgalapa was vocal about encouraging residents to adopt a culture of paying for services rendered by the municipality and enhance revenue collection.

Mokgalapa resigned as mayor last year following a sex scandal.

In the letter sent to Mokgalapa last month.

Celebgossip.co.za has learnt that the former mayor owes the municipality R4 817.91 for municipal services including rates and taxes.

The municipality demands that he settle the amount within 14 days of receiving the letter.

“It has come to my attention that your municipal services and/or rates and taxes account was not paid by the due date. This is a final demand of payment of the outstanding balance at the financial services department,” reads the letter.

“If you fail to comply with the above, the City of Tshwane metropolitan municipality will regrettably be obliged to lower the level of services to your premises and to debit the relevant charges against your account.”

City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo confirmed that the disconnection notice was delivered to Mokgalapa’s house due to the arrears.

Mashigo said should he not respond within a specific period stated in the reminder, his electricity supply would be discontinued.

“Considering that non-payment of municipal services has a negative impact on the municipality’s ability to deliver services to its residents, this is regarded as a serious violation of municipal by-laws which will lead to legal procedures,” he said.

“Debtors are encouraged to approach the city to make arrangements to settle their arrears to avoid interruptions of service and legal action.”

Mokgalapa said he had not received any letter of demand from the City of Tshwane.

“I don’t owe Tshwane anything, obviously they had discrepancies over the years, so I don’t owe them anything,” he said.

This is regarded as a serious violation of municipal by-laws.
