DJ Hlo to take legal action against those who dragged her for Song of The Year win

DJ Hlo’s career changed for the better when her controversial song Isibani, won Ukhozi FM’s 2021 Song of The Year (SOTY).

This is her biggest triumphant to date, and although she is excited to have reached this milestone, South Africans continue to drag her song.

As soon as the song of the year was announced on Ukhozi FM at midnight on New Year’s eve, some Twitter users accused Ukhozi of tribalism and claimed that many people don’t know her song.

Speaking to Isolezwe, she said she would be taking legal action against those who continue to diss her track. “Isibani is not a song that just came out of the blue. I released this track a long time ago, encouraging people to vote for it and download it. After this Ukhozi FM opened its entries for the Song of The Year and I encouraged people to nominate it and vote for it,” she said.

She said she worked tirelessly hard to promote her song including visiting taxi ranks in Joburg, Durban station and she even went to the Zulu King.

The DJ has also been accused of bribing Ukhozi FM and receiving financial aid for her businesses from certain entrepreneurs but she has debunked the claims, “Those who spread false information about me which is not true, my legal team is on top of that. They will be dealt with because that is a defamation of character. They are turning me into a complete different person and that is not okay, so my legal team is on top of that,” she concluded.

Speaking to Drum recently, she expressed her disappointment at the backlash she has received on social media. “It didn’t make me happy but it is what it is. I am thankful to be surrounded by people who make me feel proud and make me feel like this is a big achievement and they are encouraging me to focus on the positive.”

She said she was happy that some comments were positive. “I am content. I didn’t think I would receive such a big milestone at the beginning of my career. This is a great opportunity for me to grow as an artist, and to learn from other artists too,” she said.

In a press briefing she hosted today, she said she is grateful that she has a strong support system including her family despite the negative remarks on social media.

“I have a very strong support system behind me. My family has been very supportive. With all the craziness that’s been going on, I know I have that calm when I go back home,” she said.

“Even though there’s a lot of backlash on social media, there are also people that are rooting for me at the same time so I chose to focus on the positive comments.” quoted by The Witness.
