SOWETO’S biggest beauty pageant Miss Soweto is underway as the Top 40 get ready for the journey.

This year’s pageant will be held on 27 November.

The pageant’s spokesman Vista Kalipa told SunBuzz the event will be hosted by SABC3’s Expresso Show presenter Thabiso Makhubela as well we Jozi FM’s Refiloe Motsei.

He said they put together a great programme so far.

“The planning for Miss Soweto 2021 is progressing quite well, despite the ongoing lockdown challenges that we must take into consideration. Last year’s pageant went exceptionally well. We managed to pull a stellar programme, while observing and adhering to the important Covid-19 regulations and dealing with load shedding challenges,” said Vista.

“We had an incredible line-up of performances, a credible list of judges, and a limited audience comprising of family members and friends of the finalists. The event later broadcast for the general public viewing through our broadcast partners, Soweto TV and MultiChoice.”

Vista said the Top 40 will be narrowed down to 20 finalists via a public vote.

“Once we’ve reached the Top 20 finalists, we’ll then go through a rigorous process and programme where the finalists will go through workshops, training, rehearsals and once more, the public will get to vote for their favourite contestant who will go on to win the People’s Choice Award. Members of the public can vote for their favourite contestants by using the White Star WhatsApp line.

“We’ve received well over 1 000 applications this year, which is more than we’ve ever had. So, this is quite exciting given our current climate. The platform is a fantastic one and really uplifts the Soweto community,” he said.

This year’s queen will be crowned by Miss Soweto 2020, Thobile Steyn.
