Zwelinzima Vavi has recovered from a month of Covid-19

Labour movement leader Zwelinzima Vavi has recovered from Covid-19.

Vavi, who was admitted to hospital after contracting Covid-19 earlier this month, released a video on Twitter on Thursday in which he updated South Africans on his wellbeing.

Last week, the SA Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) leader announced that he would test for Covid-19 for the third time after his second test came out positive.

“Dear South Africans, comrades, friends and family members, I am a living testimony that the virus, corona, can be defeated if we act according to the regulations that have been published by the government, supported by scientists here and abroad.

“As you know I tested positive on April 2. I have been with the virus for a month.

“Yesterday, I tested negative, together with my wife. We now live in a family where no-one has corona,” said Vavi.

He thanked those who had sent him and his family messages of support while battling the virus.

“These messages have made a huge difference in strengthening our resolve to fight and to survive. Let us not forget that as we celebrate my success, my triumph against coronavirus, more than 5,000 South Africans have now tested positive and more than 100 have already died.

“The virus continues to spread and continues to invade, every South African, irrespective of your social status, you can be infected … you will be infected if you do not observe the rules.”

Vavi expressed relief that he did not have to wear a mask at home any more. He, however, stressed that he would wear a mask and gloves whenever he left his home.

The red carpet turned bed carpet for the 14th annual South African Film and Television Awards

With no actual red carpet thanks to lockdown, TV presenter Dineo Ranaka hosted a “bed carpet” from home for the 14th annual South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas), which she presented live on Twitter on Wednesday.

Ranaka kicked off the evening in a pink wig and bathrobe as her gown was apparently held up in traffic. It wasn’t long before she started to panic about what the Twitterverse would say if she did not host the virtual event in one of her usual glamorous looks.

“Guys, you have no idea, you’re presenting to a world of Twitter trolls,” she said on Instagram Live. “You guys on Instagram are nice people … you guys say nice things. Twitter, Twitter … Why couldn’t we broadcast live on Instagram where the nice people are!”

Her solution to the missing dress dilemma? To fashion a fabulous outfit out of her duvet a la the #pillowchallenge that’s been trending on social media.

It was less about high fashion and more about high jinks as the celeb later donned a farmer-inspired ensemble in one of her skits teaming shorts, a golf shirt, white tube socks and takkies with a safari hat.

But Ranaka’s look of the night has got to be the slinky gold gown (which was apparently picked out by actress Rami Chuene via Instagram), which she paired with a glittering slip turban.

Here’s what some other A-listers wore for the virtual event:

Roberto Kyle, who bagged the award for the Best Actor in a Telenovela for his role in Arendsvlei, donned a polo neck under a graphic shirt.

Former The Queen actresses Dineo Langa, Motsoaledi Setumo and Chuene got all glammed up to support their ex-co-star Loyiso MacDonald as he scooped the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Telenovela in the aforementioned show.

iThemba’s Brenda Ngxoli won the Best Supporting Actress in a TV Drama award; she rocked a jacket with faux fur collar adding a touch of elegance with a pair of pearl earrings.

Behind the seams of Lindiwe’s killer fashion on ‘The River’

Fans of this telenovela weren’t keen on the leading lady’s onscreen looks at first, admits costume designer Kgomotso Dipholo

Behind the seams of Lindiwe's killer fashion on 'The River'

Since it first hit screens in 2018, Mzansi Magic’s The River has become one of the most talked about telenovelas in SA.

This addictive mining drama is also the show that scooped up the most accolades at this year’s South African Film and Television Awards — including the Best Wardrobe and Best Make-up and Hairstyling prizes for a TV soap.

At the centre of many of the show’s deliciously twisted plotlines is Lindiwe Dlamini-Dikana, a character played by Sindi Dlathu. Lindiwe is a smart, fierce mining magnate who is always dressed to kill thanks to The River’s costume designer, Kgomotso Dipholo.

We asked Dipholo to take us behind the seams of Lindiwe’s wardrobe, and share some insight into how she uses fashion to amplify the character’s personality on screen:

How would you best describe Lindiwe’s style?

Drama on two legs.

Run us through what goes into putting Lindiwe’s wardrobe together.

Her dresses usually depict where the story is going or even her mood in a particular scene. It’s not just about putting her in an outfit because it looks nice, it’s about her telling a story. Our audience will even notice that certain items mean she is going to kill someone.

What would you say is the most iconic ensemble for the character?

Well, we’ve had a lot because she dresses to kill most of the time. But one that I love is the Xhosa attire she wore for Zolani and Tumi’s white wedding. It said, “I am here, I am a powerful black woman, I am stylish and I am all about my roots”.

Behind the seams of Lindiwe's killer fashion on 'The River'

What key elements define the character’s style?

One of her biggest fashion signatures are her big sleeves and big collared shirts.

How has the audience reacted to Lindiwe’s distinctive style?

When we started out, big sleeves and the big collars were not a thing, and did they not have me on Twitter? I even stopped going online because I knew they were going to crush me. There were even tweets about her looking like an apostolic church woman.

I wanted to create a character that was different and that you would look forward to seeing not just because of their acting but because of what they are wearing.

Two years down the line people are on board with the big sleeves and Lindiwe’s style.

Who are some of the designers who have created items for Lindiwe?

One person that I work with a lot is Sello Medupe of Scalo; we also worked with Gert-Johan Coetzee for Tumi’s wedding.

Many people would like to dress for the office in the same way Lindiwe does. Do you have any tips for doing so?

Office work is already boring enough, so I say be bold. Step out of the ordinary and go big so that when you look at those mountains of files you know you can dig into them.

Lindiwe, the character, has limitless money but in reality we are a production with a budget. So, I try to go for pieces that you can dress up or down without it being a mission.

• To see more of Lindiwe’s drop-dead gorgeous looks, catch ‘The River’ on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161).

Boity on why she opened up about her Sangoma calling

Boity on why she opened up about her Sangoma calling

Despite the backlash she got from some on social media for announcing that she was starting her spiritual journey a few years ago, Boity is glad she opened up a discussion on traditional healers.

Speaking to Glamour magazine recently, Boity noted her family and spiritual journey were at the core of what kept her motivated.

She shut down any suggestions that she had shared her journey with fans to further her career.

Boity on why she opened up about her Sangoma calling

“I don’t have any regrets about letting people in. I took a huge risk because back then people wouldn’t have revealed much about this aspect of their lives, preferring instead to keep it private.

“It was part of my spiritual journey to be open about it. I wasn’t doing it for attention or to boost my career. I’m glad that I did it because as the year progressed, people were inspired, young girls who are on a spiritual journey especially … it was to challenge mainstream beliefs about traditional healing and show people there was nothing to fear.”

The TV presenter turned rapper expressed how far South Africans have come in accepting topics about spirituality.

Boity surprised many of her fans in 2016 when she took to social media, confirming that she was set to undergo training to become a sangoma.

Boity on why she opened up about her Sangoma calling

Speaking to Bona magazine at the time, Boity said that even as a child she dreamt about situations and events that would then happen in real life. She said that as she got older she felt the void inside her more and more.

She told Sunday World in 2016 that the matter was sensitive and she preferred to keep the details of it private.

“Yes I did go thwasa but I’m not going to practise as a sangoma. This is a very sensitive matter that I don’t want to talk about in the media. It’s a personal matter and way too deep to be reduced into a celebrity gossip in the newspaper. It’s a secret. It’s so much deeper.”

Rivonia trialist Denis Goldberg dies at 87 after long battle with cancer

Rivonia trialist Denis Goldberg dies at 87 after long battle with cancer

Denis Goldberg, an anti-apartheid veteran who served 22 years in prison, has died.

His family and the Denis Goldberg Legacy Foundation Trust said on Thursday he had died just before midnight on Wednesday.

“His was a life well lived in the struggle for freedom in South Africa. We will miss him,” the notice read.

The Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation said Goldberg’s death came after a long battle with cancer, “conducted with customary courage and grace”.

It “feels as if the nation has lost part of its soul”, said the foundation set up in the name of the Anglican archbishop emeritus and his wife, stating Goldberg was “a mensch, a human being of the highest integrity and honour who eschewed personal aggrandisement and consumptiveness”.

Goldberg, twice a widower, had a son and a daughter. He was born to a progressive family in Cape Town in 1933.

He was awarded the Order of Luthuli in Silver by the presidency, which commended him for his dedication to working for the betterment of the people of SA throughout his life.

A year ago, he was also honoured with the ANC’s highest award, Isitwalandwe. On acceptance, Goldberg said: “I think it’s a recognition of the role of a whole generation of people who brought us out of the darkness of apartheid.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday the national coronavirus command council observed a moment’s silence “in honour of this special patriot” on learning of his death.

“This is a sad moment for our nation and a moment for all of us to appreciate Denis Goldberg’s brave dedication to our struggle and his lifelong activism in the interest of – and in the physical presence of – poor and vulnerable communities around our country.

“His first experience of prison was alongside his mother who had been detained for four months, but such experiences failed to intimidate him; instead, it fuelled his determination that the liberation movement should use all strategies at its disposal, including armed resistance, to end apartheid.

“His commitment to ethical leadership was unflinching and even during his advanced age, he formed part of the movement of veterans of the struggle calling for reassertion of moral centre of society. He dedicated his life to achieving the better life we enjoy today and his revolutionary contribution reinforced the non-racial character of our struggle and of our democratic dispensation.

“We will hold him in our thoughts and prayers as we say farewell at a time when we are not allowed to gather in numbers to say our goodbyes. May his soul rest in peace.”

In the early 1950s, Goldberg joined the Congress of Democrats and the Communist Party underground.

While a student at the University of Cape Town (UCT) studying civil engineering, Goldberg joined the Modern Youth Society in 1953. He continued to be an activist and joined Umkhonto we Sizwe’s (MK) technical office in the early 1960s. He became the weapon maker for Operation Mayibuye, said the presidency.

In 1963, Goldberg was arrested at the Rivonia headquarters of MK. He was sentenced in 1964 at the end of the Rivonia Trial to four terms of life imprisonment. He was the only white member of MK to be arrested and sentenced in the Rivonia Trial.

In 1985, after 22 years of imprisonment, he was set free and reunited with his family in London, where he continued to work for the ANC, said the presidency.

Goldberg was a spokesperson for the ANC and also represented it in the Anti-Apartheid Committee of the UN.

In 1995, after the first democratic election in SA, Goldberg founded the development organisation Community Heart (health education and reconstruction training) to help improve the living standards of black South Africans.

The Tutus, who last year worked with Goldberg on hosting an exhibition on the Second World War, said he was an active member of the Hout Bay community, where he lived, “particularly at the intersection of social development and the arts”.

“We send our deepest condolences to Goldberg’s family, and to the extensive circle of people he loved and who loved him.”

Movie producer Anant Singh also paid tribute to Goldberg, saying: “He was a social campaigner to his last days and his work is perpetuated through the Denis Goldberg Legacy Foundation Trust. We salute Denis as a true hero of South Africa.”

DJ Zinhle On That One Song That Reminds Her Of Her Daughter Kairo

DJ Zinhle On That One Song That Reminds Her Of Her Daughter Kairo

DJ Zinhle has explained her unconditional love for her daughter Kairo and how a particular song ignites her love for her baby.

The DJ was a guest on the ‘Drive-Through With’, a YouTube web series owned by Brands & Thabs. She allowed the them into her personal life as she spoke candidly about her career, her unconditional love for her daughter and her friendships with Queen Sono’s Pearl Thusi, newly-wed Lerato Kganyago and rapper Moozlie.

Zinhle mentioned a song she did with Bonji called Against The Grain saying it had a deeper meaning for her love for her daughter Kairo.

Although the song speaks about romance between a man and a woman, and how the person would go through extreme measures to pursue the other for a relationship.

Zinhle explained that the song reminded her of the unconditional love she has for her little girl.

“I relate more to Against The Grain because it is a deep and insane song. Whenever I hear the song, I don’t think of a romantic kind of love … I normally just think of Kairo. Like, that type of unconditional love, that pure love, for me I like the song because it talks more about Kairo,” she gushed.

The episode was shot pre-lockdown because the DJ was on her way to a gig. DJ Zinhle can also be heard referring to her ex-boyfriend, AKA, as her boyfriend.

Dineo Ranaka to host the first virtual SA Film and Television Awards event

Dineo Ranaka to host the first virtual SA Film and Television Awards event

Dineo Ranaka will host the SA Film and Television Awards (Saftas) today – the first time in their 14-year history that the awards are going virtual.

Sowetan first reported three weeks ago about the move by organisers, the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), to rework the big budget red carpet ceremony into something smaller after the national lockdown was announced.

The winners of the awards – that were originally scheduled to take place on March 27 and 28 in Sandton, Johannesburg – will be announced by Ranaka on Twitter from 5pm.

The announcement on social media will incorporate visual effects and video clips that Ranaka has pre-recorded from her home. “I’m excited; I’m always open to doing things a little different than the norm, so this is another one of those seldom opportunities to share my talents uniquely,” Ranaka said.

“The only major difference is that the production has no physical interaction with its audience, so that’s a bit of a bummer because physical interaction with audiences is always electrifying.”

NFVF chief executive Makhosazana Khanyile explained to Sowetan yesterday that changing the format of the awards was a tough decision to make, especially since it took them a year to plan. But they were left with no choice when sponsors started pulling out and they took into consideration that they have to start working on the 15th installment of the Saftas next month.

“To say that this is less than ideal would be an understatement, but we consulted as best we could and even had some industry bodies suggesting we could simply issue out a press release with the winners,” Khanyile said.

“The industry has been supportive of how difficult a decision this was, and with the awards out of the way, it also will enable the NFVF to focus its attention on supporting the industry through this difficult time by looking at varied relief measures that can be taken to directly benefit the industry.”

The nominees this year include Kgomotso Christopher, Warren Masemola, Sindi Dlathu, Leleti Khumalo, Presley Chweneyagae, Hamilton Dhlamini, Mapula Mafole, Baby Cele, Jamie Bartlett, Bongile Mantsai and Florence Masebe.

Two weeks ago the SA Radio Awards also went online, with comedian Loyiso Madinga as host. In the US, the 2020 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards have just announced that they will be a virtual affair on Saturday, with Victoria Justice as host. Sho Madjozi and Shekhinah are nominated for favourite African Star.
