Candy Tsa Mandebele Mokwena speaks about her blessing during lockdown: “There is a lot that I am celebrating”
She’s got a lot to be grateful for. Her health is good and she just scored a new gig on the SABC1 local drama series, Skeem Saam.
Award-winning musician Candy Tsa Mandebele Mokwena is happy and ready for the new challenge.
The star, who just turned 50, has been living carefully during the past few months due to the Covid-19 pandemic and is grateful her type 2 diabetes is still under control.
She’s been living with it for nine years. The pandemic has affected her work, she says.
“Even though we are experiencing difficulties due to the pandemic, there is still a lot that I am celebrating,” she says.
“I am okay, and I am healthy more than ever.
“I recently celebrated my 50th birthday on the 18th of this month. I have been busy shooting with Skeem Saam and on Friday last week I dropped my second single from my album, I Am Still Here.
The Tsa Mandebele hitmaker shared that the lockdown has made it very hard for her to make a living but her savings have sustained her and her mom sending her money every now and again has made a huge difference.
She’s not, however, dependent on her mom’s money to survive as has been reported, she says.
“The struggles that I am currently facing are struggles that everyone is going through, struggles of not working,” she shares.
“Where am I going to perform and earn a living while the whole country is on lockdown. And yes, my mom has been helping me here and there, I am her child after all.”
Her mom sends her R600 which makes a huge difference.
“But it is not that I am depending on it. I am one person who saves each time I make money. And I have been living my life comfortably this whole time,” she explains.
“I have been saving through the years and my savings have been able to sustain me.”
Since the lockdown regulations have been relaxed, she’s been shooting for her new role Bafedile on Skeem Saam. She was ecstatic when she got the role.
“It was such a blessing to me. When I heard that I had got the role, I was so happy. I couldn’t believe it.”
Her character, which will debut in August, is a feisty 50-year-old woman who returns to Turfloop after fleeing from an abusive marriage over a decade ago.
“I went for auditions just like everyone else out there and I was the lucky one to be chosen and because of the age thing. They want someone who is 50 years and I just celebrated my 50th birthday early this month.
“My debut will be on the 19th of August. Women’s month and a month that has so much significance in my life,” she says.
This August will also mark 10 years since she lost her son.
“And I will be celebrating all women in the country who have also lost their kids. I will also be celebrating myself as I have joined Skeem Saam.”
The 50-year-old singer also shared how the production team has been following all the Covid-19 regulations on set, to ensure that everyone is safe.
“It been amazing shooting on Skeem Saam, they are so professional. Professionalism starts from outside the gate when you enter, they check your temperature and sanitize you. You get to reception they also use sanitizer before they sign you in.”
She felt at home on set.
“Everyone welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like one of them and that made me so happy.”
