IT WAS a night of glitz and glamour when the winners of the Feather Awards were announced on Thursday, 11 November.

The pink carpet was rolled out at the Market Theatre in Joburg and stars came out in their numbers for the awards, which celebrate people who support and inspire the LGBTQI+ community.

Former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi took home the award for Best-Styled Individual while media personality Khanyi Mbau, who set tongues wagging when she left her boyfriend in Dubai, was named Drama Queen of the Year.

Former Miss SA Shudufhadzo Musida was named Hot Chick of the Year while actor Wiseman Zitha took home the award for Hunk of the Year.

For the first time, the awards had dual winners with Rich Mnisi sharing the Best-Styled Individual Award with Tunzi and both Makhadzi and Lady Du being named Musician of the Year.

Other winners included the late Vinolia Mashego’s son Coachella Randy, who was named Social Media Personality of the Year and DJ and writer Lelowhatsgood winning in the Socialite of the Year category. This year, the awards were held under the theme Queer Lives Matter, a nod to the global conversation about the issues facing the community.

Awards co-founder Thami Kotlolo said they were excited to have reached the milestone of 13 years. “From starting out as a small celebration at a nightclub in Rosebank, the Feathers are now a whole teenager, a fully-operational powerhouse of programmes,” he said.
