The South African summer festival season closed in superb fashion on the weekend with a sold-out crowd at both Corona Sunsets Festival in Clifton, Cape Town, on Saturday and the Corona Chasing Sunsets at Altitude Beach in Johannesburg on Sunday, which featured SA’s newly minted Grammy winner, Black Coffee.

Making its return after a two-year Lockdown hiatus, the Sunsets Festival, again showed why it has become a highlight of the South African festival calendar. Under a cloudless sky, the festival’s magnificent outdoor stages came with a world-class line-up and spectacular views of the mountains and ocean.

Iconic South African dance artists included Sun-El Musician & Msaki, who opened with a beautiful acoustic version of their hit, “Ubomi” and played as the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean on a beautiful, late summer Cape Day. Zakes Bantwini’s set of course included his hit “Osama” while other artists included Goodluck, Bantwanas and Gina Jeanz.

South Africa’s Grammy Award winner for best Electronic Dance Album for “Subconsciously”, Black Coffee brought his inimitable Afro-centric dance style to the occasion as the ultimate summer season closer. In an emotional moment at the event, a fan emerged from the crowd to present the DJ-producer with a hand-made replica of a Grammy. It was “his way,” he said, “of showing appreciation as a young artist.”“This has been an incredible season, especially coming out of lockdown and it showed just how much we find our best selves in the outdoors, with great music, friends, and of course incredible sunsets. While the summer season has ended, we have a series of sunsets hours and sessions planned in winter to look forward to, which we will be announcing soon,” said Melanie Nicholson, Corona SA Marketing Manager.

Planning for the next Corona Sunsets Festival, as well as the next Chasing Sunsets summer series, meanwhile, is already well underway.
