AKA’s bodyguard Anwar Dogg Khan speaks out
On 10 February, rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes was murdered in cold blood outside Wish Restaurant on Florida Road in Durban in the presence of his team and bodyguards. The two gunmen, who opened fire in full view of CCTV cameras, also shot and killed celebrity chef and author Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane.
In an interview that was aired on Tuesday, 21 March, on the eTV show called My Guest Tonight with Annika Larsen, the slain musician’s bodyguard Anwar “Dogg” Khan opened up about that fateful night, revealing what happened in his absence. Dogg is the owner of the Pentagon Group bodyguard service and had been protecting AKA for the past eight years whenever the musician was in Durban.
However, during his final visit to the KwaZulu-Natal city, Dogg was already booked to provide security to US rapper Abbas “Bas” Hamad, who was in South Africa at the time. As a result, he assigned one of his employees to protect the Last Time rapper. Dogg has provided VIP security for international stars Oprah Winfrey, Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, Kendrick Lamar, the late Michael Jackson and many others.
Speaking to Larsen, he explained that there were no plans for AKA to go to Florida Road that night and he would’ve prevented him from going. 90% of our work is the manner in which we move. It’s the planning, how you pre-plan, how you schedule your timing and placing of yourself and the person [you are protecting],” he told Larsen.
He further said that part of their job is to restrict movement, therefore reducing threats “In my absence, protocol was breached. Kiernan was called and invited to go to Florida Road (Wish) which he accepted and he went. Had I been there, that protocol would not have been breached, simply because that call would’ve came through the road manager,” Dogg said.
AKA’s road manager was “Scorpion” Siya Mdluli, who is rapper Ntokozo “K.O” Mdluli’s brother. According to Dogg, AKA had been receiving threats. This information he also received during his interview with Sunday Times a week after the Fela in Versace hitmaker’s death.
He told the publication that the late artist began hearing about threats shortly after his fiancée, Anele “Nelli” Tembe, died in April 2021. Anele fell to her death from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel on Loop street, while they were together.
His tragic passing came as a shock to many, tonight we speak to the body gaurd of the late Kiernan Jarryd Forbes known professionally as AKA.

Although he refused to elaborate, Dogg said that the treats always came from the same place. In addition, he said that the Lemons (Lemonade) rapper did not have beef with any musician, or women or was involved in any drug deals. His insurance and record label deals were also in place. AKA did not take on any gigs for a couple of months … I strengthened his security and reduced his movements.
“But even with all those restricted movements there were times when we had gigs, where AKA would fly in, go straight to the performance and then go straight back to either a private jet or take a late flight straight out of KwaZulu-Natal,” the publication quoted him as saying.
